  • Ancient Greek

    longstanding love; Marriage love.

"Another Greek love was the mature love known as pragma. This was the deep understanding that developed between long-married couples.

Pragma was about making compromises to help the relationship work over time, and showing patience and tolerance.

The psychoanalyst Erich Fromm said that we expend too much energy on "falling in love" and need to learn more how to "stand in love." Pragma is precisely about standing in love—making an effort to give love rather than just receive it. With about a third of first marriages in the U.S. ending through divorce or separation in the first 10 years, the Greeks would surely think we should bring a serious dose of pragma into our relationships."

  • "This was the Greeks' idea of playful love, which referred to the affection between children or young lovers. We've all had a taste of it in the flirting and teasing in the early stages of a relationship. But we also live out our ludus when we sit around in a bar bantering and laughing with friends, or when we go out dancing.

Dancing with strangers may be the ultimate ludic activity, almost a playful substitute for sex itself. Social norms may frown on this kind of adult frivolity, but a little more ludus might be just what we need to spice up our love lives."

  • French for the heartbreaking pain of wanting someone or something you can’t have. La douleur exquise is not the same as unrequited love – the state of one desiring another they can’t have. • The sudden knowledge upon meeting someone that the two of you are destined to fall in love.

Unlike the phrase “love at first sight” Koi No Yokan doesn’t mean that the feeling of love is already there when meeting someone, rather this describes the concept of feeling like love is inevitable. It’s looking at someone and feeling those sparks that a deeper romantic connection is possible.

    https://thoughtcatalog.com/koty-neelis/2014/11/23-untranslatable-foreign-words-that-describe-love-better-than-you-ever-thought/

    Literally, "Love's premonition"

    Koi: love

No: possessive particle (Japanese have a word for possession unlike English which uses an apostrophe).

Yokan: Premonition. Note: a slightly differnent alternative translation of yokan is "presentment."

It means meeting someone and knowing early on that the two of you will fall in love.

    恋の予感 "koi no yokan"

In English there's no equivalent to Japanese word 恋 "koi."

There's an English phrase "love at first sight." This stage is similar to 恋 "koi." As you know the stage of "Love at first sight" is not actual love (yet). We call this step as 恋 "koi" in Japanese. If their romance continues and reaches to the next step, 恋 "koi" might grow into 愛 "love." Japanese language clearly defines the first step and the second.

予感 "yokan" could be different meaning with an adjective: good or bad. English words like premonition or presentiment are mostly a bad prediction. But Japanese word 予感 "yokan" is neutral.

When two words are combined as 恋の予感 "koi no yokan," we can sense speaker's heart beat and excitement. The speaker is hopeful about being more than a friend with him or her.

  • When one's throat and sinuses feel like crap, and the back of their throat gets just that way so as to make swallowing hurt but not in the conventional sense, but in a way that I can only describe as a feeling of grossness combined with a dull pain, their voice tends to sound a certain way.

Well, assnose is when your voice sounds that way when you *aren't* sick. Basically like you're trying to put the least possible amount of effort on your nose when you're talking, so it ALL comes out the mouth instead.

"...This study of number behavior is called 'Numeronomy' in contradistinction to numerology, whereas numerology finds patterns and correlations in numbers through subjective means, numeronomy finds patterns and correlations in the interrelationships between numbers themselves. This difference can be likened to the difference between astrology and astronomy, the former looks at the affects of celestial bodies from a subjective standpoint (from our point of view) while the latter gains knowledge of the interrelationships between the planets through study of the motions of the planets themselves."
