  • In parts of Italy houses were built in certain superstitious times with a separate door whose sole purpose was to facilitate removal of the body of anyone who died in the house. In this way the regular door for the living was not 'contaminated'. Door of the dead are recognisable because they're small and usually some way up the wall, i.e. a convenient height for passing a body out on to a funeral cart.
