  • "The following observations are made by Varenius:—

'Currents are various, and directed towards different parts of the ocean, of which some are constant, and others periodical. The most extraordinary current of the sea is that by which part of the Atlantic or African ocean moves about Guinea from Cape Verd (sic) towards the curvature or bay of Africa, which they call Fernando Poo, viz. from west to east, contrary to the general motion. And such is the force of this current, that when ships approach too near the shore, it carries them violently towards that bay, and decieves the mariners in their reckoning.'"

  • I'm with reesetee.

    October 14, 2008

  • Here, I'll go check again.... Okay. It's in one of the many entries under currents, and it most definitely says Poo. I mean, those are not some other vowels. They're clearly o's.

Also, if you click the first Google link, above, it takes you to a real Wiki article. Oh, and while you're investigating, there's a brief article about the history of postage of Fernando Poo.

I'm not making this up. In fact I think it's my favorite Wordie find ever. See also Fernão do Pó.

*desperately wants to be introduced to Fernando Poo*

Nevermind. I'm going to start calling my dogs this. I even already have a list I can put it on. Though I'm actually wondering whether there needs to be a "Not Only Not Specific, It's Also Not Excrement" list.

    October 15, 2008

  • Your recent foray into non-excremental pooping would be a good candidate for that list.

    October 15, 2008

  • You're right. First there's a pooping sea, then Fernando Poo. Who knows how many more are out there?! I'm gonna do it. Here, in case anyone has suggestions.
