Definitions

from The Century Dictionary.

  • An order of monocotyledonous plants, created by A. Braun in 1864, and still adhered to by Goebel and other botanists, but regarded by most as embracing several natural orders, such as the Lemnaceæ, Alismaceæ, Naiadaceæ, and Hydrocharideæ. In Sachs's classification it is expanded into a series embracing several orders and subordinate families.
