  • Wow, the female sexuality raises fear wherever it goes... First autopsies made to women were quite a relief to some people (=men, since all the pathologists were men around that time). Look! No teeth!! Whew!

  • That's... weird. Not least because I believe a fair number of men have encountered vaginas in, uh, contexts other than an autopsy. And survived.

  • I first heard this word in Snow Crash, possibly the perfect SF novel. It is a device which sits in the woman's vagina, essentially a sharp needle filled with a chemical to knock out a would be rapist.

The Vagina Dentata myth is a lot older than Snow Crash, and assumes different forms. Wikipedia lists some of them.

  • Oh, yeah? Also try not to push the button that says: 'Search Google Images' what it comes to this term. It might sound a good idea, but it is not. You will drop the damn cup of tea all together.

  • FWIW, Wordie is a family site, and I have Yahoo! image search set to "safe search" mode, which is supposed to filter "adult oriented" images.

  • A truly...unique version of vagina dentata appeared in a 1959 Soviet science fiction film called Nebo Zovyot, a pioneering film that garnered some critical respect until Roger Corman bought it, recruited a young Francis Ford Coppola to rework it, and released it to American audiences as "Battle Beyond the Sun." That film is pretty awful, but when the battle between two monsters begins it's pretty difficult not to understand why "vagina dentata" is a keyword for this movie on IMDB.

Even though I also like Boba Fett and I was sorry to see him drop into the big vagina in the ground.

  • Latin -- toothed vagina

Various cultures have folk tales about women with toothed vaginas, frequently told as cautionary tales warning of the dangers of sex with strange women and to discourage the act of rape.

A great tongue-in-cheek movie concerning this is 'Teeth'. I highly recommend it. It is more dark humour than horror, if that helps you.
