  • This is my favorite argument-ender. "But why don't you take 295 North instead of 95? There's less traffic!"

    "Why do you hate freedom?!"

    April 29, 2008

  • Ha! Oh, c_b, that's hilarious!

    April 29, 2008

  • Even my spawn says it now. "Can I borrow the car?"

    "No."

"... Why do you hate freedom?"

    April 29, 2008

  • Yes, but why would you *want* take 295? (I haven't actually heard of a 295...but then I have no sense of direction.)

    May 1, 2008

  • Oh, to bypass downtown Richmond, of course. But that's just an example. Here's another one:

"I think we should make Burger King for dinner."

"Nah, we should make something healthy at home. It's cheaper."

    "Why do you hate freedom?"

    May 1, 2008

  • "I think we should take 2 cars to grandma's so I can leave early"

    "No."

    "Why?"

"'Cause gas is almost 4 freakin' dollars a gallon. THAT'S why."

    "Why do you hate freedom?"

    May 1, 2008

  • Haha, I love this. I'm going to stary using it.

"Why haven't you handed in your essay?"

    "Why do you hate freedom?"

    May 2, 2008

  • But wait until your teacher gets ahold of it:

    "I didn't grade your papers."

"Gee-whiz, Miss Jennarenn! It's been, like, four months. What gives?"

    "Why do you hate freedom?"

c_b: Oy. I was thinking that that road was called 264. See? No sense of direction.

    May 2, 2008

  • But think of the opportunities in an office setting.

"I didn't finish editing the manuscript."

"But it was due 2 weeks ago! What's the problem?"

    "Why do you hate freedom?"

    Or this:

"I moved your stuff into that tiny cubicle-ette and moved my stuff into your office."

    "What?? But that's my office!"

    "Why do you hate freedom?"

    May 2, 2008

  • I was trained to hate freedom. I'm a Freedom Fighter.

    May 3, 2008

  • *snort*

    10 gold stars, gangerh!

    May 3, 2008

  • Indeed! Chapeau gangerh!

    May 3, 2008

  • Haha! Gangerh, you either have a way with words or words have their way with you; I'm not sure which just yet.... ;-)

    May 3, 2008

  • For those readers from Mars who wonder about the origins of this, this phrase is of course the perfectly sarcastic retort to George W. Bush's explanation of 9/11, and the with-us-or-against-us mentality in the years that followed. Rather than explore the complex origins of terrorism against the US, he summarized their motivations as being solely that "they hate our freedoms."

    September 3, 2008

  • Thank you for telling me. I didn't know it.

    *moves green antennae*

    September 3, 2008

  • Yes, thanks for explaining the origins, harrisj--it is certainly useful! You may not be aware, though, there are a whole lotta* wordie-denizens who do not live in the United States, so it isn't necessarily that readers of the site would be Martians. You'll also find a whole lotta* lists and words that don't make much sense to Americans.

    :) Welcome to Wordie!

*I want kudos for resisting using a new term I just learned for "a whole lot of": asston.

P.S. Pro, and others, this phrase was made comical by Stephen Colbert of the Colbert Report, among others. You can see clips of his show at Comedy Central (dot com)—I think. And there are quite a few Colbert Report lists around here. (I have one but haven't kept up with it.)

    September 3, 2008

  • Well, I for one am a Martian. And I get the distinct feeling bilby is as well. Those ears are definitely not earthly.

    September 3, 2008

  • I like the Colbert Report! I don't have a TV, though, so I watch it randomly on-line.

    September 3, 2008

  • See also an interesting usage here.

    September 3, 2008

  • I think it's comforting that harris took the time to explain it, for posterity. Nothing wrong with that.

Have you handed that essay in yet, plethora?

    September 4, 2008

  • Haha, probably not, b. And I've got about another 5 on top of it.

    September 4, 2008

  • I can see that you detest freedom with all your soul ;-)

    September 4, 2008

  • Congrats, c_b, on one of your Favorite Words That Are More Like Phrases winning Phrase of the Year 08!

Not that you invented it or anything.... ;-) (See below.)

    January 9, 2009

    January 9, 2009

    March 18, 2009

    *loves Overheard*

*will now spend rest of day catching up on all the new entries on all the Overheards*

    *off to overhear stuff*

    April 3, 2009

  • I love when cartoons have that little tiny aside way off in the corner. "Maybe they like us better now." Hee!
