Schizaeaceae which is very poor in species, differ much more from each other than any two forms of the group Polypodiaceae which numbers its thousands of species.

Over 31 types of plant fossils have been identified although most are taxonomically identified at the family level: club mosses Selaginellaceae, royal fern Osmundaceae, curly grass fern Schizaeaceae, cypress Cupressaceae, plum yew Cephalotaxaceae, and swamp cypress Taxodiaceae, and the walnut tree Junglandacea.

All seven of the ancient fern families from the world’s existing flora of about 36 families occur in the region (Lycopodiaceae, Selaginellaceae, Ophioglossaceae, Marattiaceae, Osmundaceae, Schizaeaceae, and Gleicheniaceae).
