Brathwaite’s output during the eighties and early nineties engaged something he called the Sycorax mode of writing — an aesthetic that combines bit-map fonts, a complex of typological accidents and inventions, and hints of concrete verse, combined with a greater and greater shift towards a sometimes invented Caribbean “creole” or “patwa” to produce dense, intellectually challenging, emotionally raw and complex, works that blurred the line between history, memoir, poetics and theoretical texts.
