- noun In Tibet, a pyramidal structure of solid stone masonry which corresponds, as far as use is concerned, to the Indian chaitya or stupa. Originally intended to contain relics, they were also raised as cenotaphs in memory of a Buddha or of a Buddhist saint, and came to be regarded as themselves symbols of the Buddhist doctrine.
