  • How is this phrase of benefit to our community?

    August 5, 2011

  • Once upon a time there was a site called Wordie... back in the wordie days, there were no capital letters and our community was peaceful and harmonious. If a playful fox wanted to list a book title, we were happy to play along--and maybe learn something. Then one day capitalism came along. Long arguments broke out about capitonyms and Capitonyms--and many fufluns were thrown. One day, a gull realized that the fox had been right about capitonyms all along, and once again there was peace in the community.

The moral of this story? Any attempts to foil the fox's fun will be met with fufluns.

    Mmm. Fufluns....

  • How is this phrase of benefit to our community?

I don't feel any particular obligation to answer this question, which is, at face value, a little obnoxious. Does it bother you that I maintain a list of the word- and language-related books that I own, and that I might periodically update this list?

If I choose to add a comment that links to a review of the book in question at some later point, should I be expected to "justify" that as well?

This list is useful to me. I find your question to be out of line, though I'm sure you didn't mean to give offense.

  • It is precisely by not being "of benefit to our community" that this phrase, and countless others like it, benefit our community.

  • *catches fuflun, now stale, and eats it anyway*

  • Just stick it in the microwave for a few seconds--that'll help.
