I booted into recovery mode (held down shift at startup) and opened up the root shell and tried to run gdm from the terminal (I just entered 'gdm', which has worked for me before).

Anyway, at some point I decided that Xfce was a bit too resource hungry, logged in as root using 'su root' in the terminal and installed lxde instead while retaining the xdm login manager and rejecting the gdm which is the default for lxde, AFAIK.

You could also achieve a lean and good-looking XFCE by apt-getting the xfce4 and xubuntu-defautlt-settings packagesin place of lxde (don't install xubuntu-desktop though): sudo apt-get install xorg gdm xfce4 xubuntu-default-settings synaptic firefox paintbox
