On our ride there which involved two guaguas and a ride up a mountain in the back of a pickup truck we overheard a hilarious conversation.

I have been dying to write about my weekend trip to Jarabocoa, another mountaineous area in the DR, approximately 50 kilometers/5 hour trip/2 camionetas-trucks, 2 guaguas-buses, and a long walk uphill, away from Constanza.

I found out how right he was when I tried to get on one of the Guaguas up to the Abonico and learned none of the drivers would take me because I had a dog In this country there are two types of guaguas, mid ninetees trucks and late eighties minivans, the autopista is almost all minivans, i.e. no dogs allowed.

This past week has been a fairly intense immersion into this culture and life - a mixture of adjusting to living with a host family, sleeping under a mosquito net, taking baths with a bucket of cold water, taking guaguas (very packed buses) into the city, eating fried platanos for breakfast, lunch and dinner, dancing and playing games with my 7 year old host sister, and spending time with one of the most interesting groups of people I´ve ever worked with (my fellow volunteers).
