- A group of single-celled transparent vegetable organisms from .5 to 1.5 mm. in diameter, and spherical, oval, or spindle-shaped. Their continuous cell-membrane is thin and transparent like glass. They are present in enormous numbers in tropical and subtropical seas and are one of the chief sources of the phosphorescence of their waters.
