  • The alternate petitions, such as the versicles and suffrages, which pass conjointly between the clergyman and the congregation in liturgical churches; specifically, in the English choral service, those versicles (with the Gloria Patri) which immediately precede the Psalms, beginning “O Lord, open thou our lips.”
