- noun In machinery, a bearing for a shaft; a journal-box or pillow-block for shafting, whether resting on the floor, on a bracket, or suspended from the ceiling. When suspended from a ceiling, such bearings are called
shafting-hangers , or simply hangers. See cut underjournal-bearing .
