A sea~term for the weakest grog possible~ six portions of water to each rum~ hardly enough spirit to swear by. J.C. Hotten, Slang Dictionary, 1887 Given as punishment for neglect or drunkenness, instead of the usual four~water, which is one part rum, four parts water, lime~juice and sugar.
