So I went ahead with the small helper, and after a few hours of hacking in September 2008, there was already some working code and a patch to make system-config-printer use this.

I've used system-config-printer in Mandriva and Ubuntu.

This is just one simple example of how Windows is no more easier than Linux, and I might go as far to say that system-config-printer was easier in that it at least recommended a driver while Windows simply listed drivers with no recommended driver leaving the user to scratch their head as to whether or not to use driver PS5, driver PCL 6, driver etc ...
