If you install gnome or kde it will install the default x-windows for the distribution you're using as a prerequisite as those are desktop environments/window managers.

This is not the detailed solution, but if you do the following: apt-get install kdesktop it will install x-windows and all the necessary dependencies for the KDE desktop (the same as if you had selected 'desktop' in the original install).
