If his iambic and his pentameter sometimes did not meet
The Glorious Bard, would often pull something neat and fleet
‘twasn’t really deceit, perhaps a bit of conceit
But if you are a genius, then you get to cheat
He had reason to feel elite and replete
Not of an age, but for all time - complete
When the perfect word did not fill up his cup
The Eternal Bard - he just made something up
In the game called “coining” he was the best of the best
New words blossomed out at his barest request
Though it’s true some people were stressed and distressed
Jealous, depressed, linguistic repressed . . .
Old Will didn’t care and his ink flowed like wine
His ‘new’ words were divine; by accident or design
Of course it wasn’t like that really, not even at the time
My jest with academic history is as bad as my vile rhyme
But the Bawdy Bard was fond of jest and I don’t think he’d care
If my discussion on his “coined words” is somewhat full of air
In truth, he coined so many words that were not there before
He changed the language all alone; our Gifted-Guarantor
I am not a genius, more the inverse
(Just look at this painful, rhyming verse!)
But, just like Will, I don’t give a damn
And it’s not just an empty cup
It’s a perverse and impenitent past time
I just like to make words up
