The cadavers on most body farms come from two sources: medical examiners -- "If nobody claims a body, you have to do something with it." -- and pre-donors. The latter is the preferred method: pre-donors bestow their corporeal remains to the facility after they die. The body farm in Carbondale, Illinois uses pigs as human proxies.

The first body farm outside the United States is being established by the University of Technology, Sydney, Australia with construction beginning in 2015.
