And while we're on the subject, here's a poem I found many years ago, and still love, about a certain kind of twilight.

TO THE BIRDS

today before night came the sky

was a color that might have been called

with equal justice violet green or gray

so I left it

to the birds who argued loudly

and inconclusively for an hour

until each fell asleep in a moment (it's

amazing how

they sleep) leaving me to calcu-

late the dimensions of the rhomboid

which the streetlamp presses to the ceiling like

a handkerchief
