Judith Tarr's Hound and Falcon trilogy - and its two follow-ups, Alamut and The Dagger and the Cross - were a revelation to me; Kay's recreations of an alternate Provence (Song for Arbonne) or medieval Spain in El Cid's time (The Lions of Al-Rassan) made me into a die-hard fan, and his Tigana is one of the best books I've ever read, EVER, bar none.
