Of the four primary Northeast Coastal Bantu subgroups — Seuta, Ruvu, Asu, and Sabaki — the Sabaki group has so far garnered the most scholarly attention.

Proto-Northeast-Coastal Bantu speakers, as they spread out of their original settlement areas, almost immediately began to diverge into three emergent speech communities: pre-Asu, proto-Sabaki, and proto-Wami.

The first of these resulted in ancestral Asu speakers settling into the South Pare Mountains and in proto-Sabaki speech communities spreading north of the Pangani River, along the narrow stretches of the Kenyan coast.

Within a century or two, Asu speakers likely had interactions with Chaga-Dabida Upland-derived communities who lived in the adjacent North Pare Mountain zones.

Perhaps no more than a century or two later, while Asu and early Sabaki speech communities strengthened their footing in their new homelands, the proto-Wami language began to diverge into proto-Seuta and proto-Ruvu.
