CCAMLR takes an multi-species ecosystem and precautionary approach, and as such has been considered a path-breaking agreement, and it has inspired more recent conservation MEAs such as the Convention on Biological Diversity which has "adopted it as a 'framework for the analysis and implementation of the objectives of the Convention'" (Redgwell 1999 quoting Decision II/8 (1995)).
