If you want to avoid the big-boys (DHL, FedEx, UPS etc) then sending packages out of Mexico can be handled by the Mexican state postal service at your local 'Correos' although I think they are still using donkeys to get to the international hub in D.F. then carrier pigeons to your final destination ... prices are reasonable though.

I had a rather large outstanding order with Amazon at the time and sure enough, Aduana clipped me for 17% and Correos de México clipped me about $20 pesos or so "handling charge" for collecting the duty for Aduana.
-
I can't claim it's perfect, but since I quit shipping to folks who wouldn't or couldn't give me at least some reasonable approximation of their Mexican address so that I can write it out the Mexican way, I have never had Correos de México lose a package of mine and my customers report they get stuff quicker than ever before.

Correos de México has improved immensely over the years I've lived here and is now pretty trustworthy.
-
I just suggest to newbies that the closer they can follow the Correos de México method, the better.

The total from Amazon shipped direct (delivered by Correos de México) was $30.99 (incl. shipping chg. of 9.98 and duty of 3.05), but it would have to be picked up at the post office in order to pay the custom's duty.

I have to admit that I have only rarely been charged duty on anything coming in via USPS/Correos de México, but there have been instances where I was charged (never on books, as they are duty free from NAFTA countries).
-
I find that I get VERY good service from Correos de México when the shipper religously follows my instructions for writing my address exactly in the Mexican style.

That logbook is kept for all foreign packages, as Correos de México treats them all as a sort of registered mail (and has you sign a receipt showing you picked it up), whether duty is owed or not, particularly the USPS International Priority Mail flat-rate envelopes and boxes.

Maybe books aren't a temptation to potential "rateros" working for Correos!
