Those classified as Damara under apartheid legislation were settled in arid areas in and around Khorixas in the north-west of what was then SA-administered South West Africa.

This species is very similar to the Damara ring-necked dove, Streptopelia capicola, but can be distinguished by its red orbital ring, which is clearly visible in the photograph above.
