The plot essentially revolves around all the obstacles that stand between him and his dream — from his overprotective moth er, played with great warmth by Melinda Dillon , of "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" fame, to Scut Farkus, the neighborhood bully and his toadie Grover Dill , who terrorize Ralphie, his younger brother Randy and their friend Flick every day to and from school.
