- An order of fossil ganoids of the Devonian and Carboniferous periods, connecting the ganoids and selachians, having a cartilaginous skeleton, heterocercal tail, small rhomboidal scales, and a fulcrum before each fin. It includes such genera as Acanthodes, Chiracanthus, Diplacanthus, etc.
