Of course, this is not as outrageous as it may seem. Urine may well have been involved in the manufacture of those marvellous old violins…

I've seen something similar being done in Indonesia where inferior kinds of wood are soaked in urine for a month. This gives the wood a darker hue and enables it to be passed off as ebony, at least to gullible tourists.
