From Middle English beclippen, from Old English beclyppan ("to clip, clasp, embrace, enfold"), from Proto-Germanic *bi- (“be-”), *klupjanan (“to hold, clench”), from Proto-Indo-European *glēb-, *glēp- (“to hold, clench”), equivalent to be- +‎ clip.
