The Lu Liang Mountains of central Shanxi Province contain the Pangquan Gou Nature Reserve (105 km2), a major breeding ground for the brown-eared pheasant (Crossoptilon mantchuricum).
Another nature reserve, Luya Shan (215 km2), in the northeastern corner of the Luliang Mountains, provides additional habitat for brown-eared pheasant.
