From Middle English cheslip ("rennet"), from Old English cȳslybb, cīeslybb ("rennet", literally "cheese medicine, cheese potion"), equivalent to cheese + lib. Cognate with Middle Dutch kaeslibbe ("rennet"), Middle High German kǣselap ("rennet, acidic liquid").
