There seem to be, however, a few near endemics such as two geese (Chloephaga hybrida and C. rubiceps), blackish cinclodes (Cinclodes antarcticus), black throated finch (Melanodera melanodera) and striated caracara (Phalcoboenus australis).

Endemic birds found in this ecoregion and the Central Andean Wet Puna ecoregion include the endangered Ash-breasted tit-tyrant (Anairetes alpinus); the critically threatened royal cinclodes (Cinclodes aricomae); the Berlepsch's canastero (Asthenes berlepschi), classified as vulnerable; and the line-fronted canastero (Asthenes urubambensis), scribble-tailed canastero (Asthenes maculicauda), short-tailed finch (Idiopsar bracyurus), and gray-bellied flower-piercer (Diglosa carbonaria), classified as species of least concern.

These birds include the Junin grebe (Podiceps taczanowskii), Junin rail (Laterallus tuerosi), black-breated-hillstar (Oreotrochilus melanogaster), dark-winged miner (Geositta saxicolina), white-bellied cinclodes (Cinclodes palliatus), and Junin canastero (Asthenes virgata).
