Other Thoughts: Default timings of these dimms in most mobos may NOT be the advertised 9-9-9-24 1600 (PC3 12800), they will likely be significantly slower (in order to guarantee operation in slower/marginal mobos.)

Opening the dimms is done by loosening the 2 screws (protected by void warranty stickers), then slowly twisitng the the heatsinks off.

BTW the above caution applies to most DDR3 and DDR2 dimms in most mobos.

I think the only difference between the 2 different style dimms is the heat spreader design.

I noticed yesterday that my trackpad was behaving erratically and upon looking in system profiler discovered that one of my 1GB memory dimms was failing and the system was running on one slot (I understand that older macs don't like having unbalanced RAM) and after some testing have narrowed it down to the lower memory slot being at fault.
