The majority of users, Mac or Windows (90% of people cannot tell you whan a browser is), find computing confusing and the dmg is the ultimate confusion - it's a file, that represents a disk but rather than inserting it you mount it by double clicking (unless automatic), and then when you see the App inside it make sure you don't run the app from the disk itself but move it into the application folder unless it's an installer in which case you do double click it, and then when that process is done eject the virtual disk and move the dmg to the trash.
