chained_bear commented on the word doberman pinscher
a dog breed "developed in Germany in 1860, presumably by crossings among Great Danes, German shepherds, rottweilers, and pinschers, with possibly some blood of the beauceron and the English greyhound. The creator of this mixture was a German tax collector named Louis Dobermann. Dobermann had to travel frequently through bandit-infested areas, and he decided to 'construct' a watchdog and bodyguard.... Bearing the name of its originator (shortened by one N), the Doberman was first presented in a dog show in 1876." (Simon & Schuster's Guide to Dogs, 1980)
