A book-signing by an author in which the author calls a bookstore a few days before intending to stop by, asks whether copies of his/her book are in stock, then drops and signs them after revealing himself/herself to a bookstore employee. The idea is to bypass the hoopla of booking through an events manager, bookstore manager, publisher, etc., and thereby get to as many copies as possible in as many stores as possible. More here.
