From Middle English, from Old English fordrunken, past participle of fordrincan ("to make drunk, be drunk"), from Proto-Germanic *fra- + *drinkanan (“to drink”), equivalent to for- + drunken. Cognate with Dutch verdronken ("drowned"), German vertrunken ("drunk"), Danish fordrukken ("drunken, very drunk"), Icelandic fordrukkinn ("drunken, very drunk"). More at for-, drunken.
