- In Cuvier's system of classification, a family of subbrachiate mala-copterygian fishes, including all the symmetrical forms of the order, and contrasted with the flatfishes. It embraces the Gadidæ, Macruridæ, Brotulidæ, and other families of recent ichthyologists. Also Gadoidei, Gadites.
