Working in a natural history museum, I see a lot of surpassingly strange things. The hippopotamus stomach wasn't on my desk, but pickled in a metal container outside the door to my office for several years. I never understood why it was there, when the other 22,000 or so specimens in the mammal collection were in the museum's basement.

You never know when you need a hippo stomach, mollusque. Or pickled mammal parts. (See pickled pig lips.)
