I couldn't even sew on a button (Vision impared of the guide dog using, Braille reading variety) so will never be able to make my own; but for those who can, running up dresses, skirts, etc can save $$$ and you can get the look you want, or find and work with one who sews locally; blow for blow, it will often come out comparible with purchasing or even cheaper.
