I think along with the combination of the size and clarity like you mentioned, that thumping sound on the soundtrack, plus the scope of the actual shot (a huge expansive cityscape with the tracking movement already in motion towards the glass building), plus the switch between the 35mm letterboxed flames/batsignal into the huge IMAX format instantaneously just made that an awesomely impacting opening.

That "comparison" image is on every post about this topic around the Internet, and nobody seems to mention that for almost every movie TDK being an exception to this it is invalid: a film that wasn't shot in IMAX will be letterboxed when projected onto the huge IMAX screens.
