I bet people who happily download pirated material still frequent these large retailers for other reasons and don't give a damn about the artists. incorrect, the vast majority of of the cost of a typical $12 cd goes to the labels themselves, it's true that the artists only see pennies on the dollar but the large retailers also work on small margins. one of my clients used to be a chain of movie theaters, namely lowes; i remember when "8 mile" came out and i went to one of the theaters to see the movie (the manager used to always comp whatever i wanted to see). so i walk in the side employee entrance and find the manager and ask him if i can watch a movie and he says i can see anything i want except "8 mile" because it's playing on half the screens (in a theater with about 20 screens, no less) and every single showing is sold out. so i make the comment to him that they must be making a killing that night and what he says shocks me; he informs me that not only do they not make any money from the tickets they sell but they actually lose money on the movies.
