We had the added bonus of taking in the sights, smells and daily transactions taking place in th array of local produce markets that fill the backstreets behind the tourist sector: tea sellers keeping their various blends of teas shaped into perfectly pointed cones; candy and pastry shops making an incredible variety of treats for the Indian sweet tooth (and abundance of weddings happening at this time of year); jewellery shops filled with Indian moen seated on cushions in front of lowset counters, painstakingly selecting suitable dowry gifts for their daughters ... and husbands / brothers taking a backseat, waiting for the moment to pay.
