- A family of pediculate fishes with branchial apertures in the superior axilla of the pectoral fins, the anterior dorsal ray in a cavity overhung by the anterior margin of the forehead, the mouth subterminal or inferior, and the lower jaw generally received within the upper; the bat-fishes. It includes marine fishes of remarkable aspect, representing two subfamilies, Maltheinæ and Halieutœinæ.
