• A family of opisthomous fishes exemplified by the genus Mastacembelus, without ventrals or prominent anal papillæ, with the body eel-like, and with numerous free dorsal spines. The species inhabit fresh waters of southern Asia and of Africa, and are known as spiny-eels.
