Kewpid, it's not engineered. It's just a stupid method of beating our collective chest over athletics--the U.S. has just about always dominated the Olympics if you count objects, or athletes, or tourist dollars, or anything that can be counted. I can't speak for the NYT, but in general the media has done it this way for at least the last forty years. *sigh*
Not what the Olympics are supposed to be about.
