Almost 20 percent of the myxoid liposarcoma tumors studied had a mutated form of the gene PIK3CA.
Type (full-length or truncated) and level of expression varied with morphology and karyotype, with the highest levels in atypical lipomatous tumors and lipomas with rearrangements of 12q13-15 and the lowest in lipomas with 6p - or 13q-rearrangements, hibernomas, spindle cell lipomas and myxoid liposarcomas.
In addition, they had ductal arrangements or plasmacytoid appearances of tumor cells and myxoid or hyaline stromata, indicating some characteristics of pleomorphic adenoma.
The lesion was surgically removed with a right hepatic lobectomy and the pathology was consistent with metastatic myxoid / round cell liposarcoma.
Less than one year after resection of a myxoid / round cell liposarcoma of the left lateral calf, a 61-year-old male presented with a CT scan showing a 2 cm low-density lesion in the right lobe of the liver.
