- In ornithology, the palmate or web-footed birds collectively, considered as a major group of aquatic birds; the swimming as distinguished from the wading or grallatorial birds. In Nitzsch's classification (1829) the group consisted of the Longipennes, Nasutæ, Unguirostres, Steganopodes, and Pygopodes.
