  • An order of dicotyledonous, chiefly choripetalous plants, characterized by having two or more carpels united into a compound ovary, hypogynous stamens, and mostly distinct sepals. It embraces six families of which the most important are the Papaveraceæ, or poppy family, the Brassicaceæ, or mustard family, and the Capparidaceæ, or caper family.
